Where clay, art and heritage come together.
A Working Pottery Studio & Gallery in the Blackwood Region. The Old Stables building built of local clay in the 1860s, this former stable once housed the horses of guests at the Blackwood Inn. Today, it is home to handcrafted ceramic works & art, celebrating both the legacy of the land and the fire of modern artistry.
We honour the discipline and tradition of clay while embracing innovation and artistic exploration across mediums.

Commitment to Excellence

Gary Hambleton is the founder and heart of Old Stables Pottery. A potter with decades of experience and a deep commitment to the discipline of ceramics, Gary established the studio as a place where craft, experimentation and community could come together.
He not only shaped the vision for Old Stables Pottery but physically built its foundations, creating the studio’s distinctive rammed-earth building and establishing a working environment designed around the making of ceramics. His practice is grounded in a respect for materials, process and the quiet discipline of making by hand.
Today, Gary continues to develop his own ceramic practice while sharing his knowledge and experience with emerging and established makers. His approach reflects a lifetime of learning through clay, firing and experimentation, and remains central to the spirit of Old Stables Pottery.
Japneet Keith brings a contemporary design perspective to Old Stables Pottery as Creative Director. With a background in industrial design, sculpture, ceramics, brand development and community arts, Japneet works across the creative, curatorial and strategic aspects of the studio.
Her role is to develop the creative direction of Old Stables Pottery, building connections between artists, makers, audiences and the wider creative community. She brings a strong focus on design, experimentation, education and creating opportunities for artists to share their knowledge and practice.
Together, Gary and Japneet bring complementary strengths to the studio — Gary’s deep knowledge of clay and decades of making, alongside Japneet’s design-led and contemporary creative approach. Their shared aim is to build a studio that values craftsmanship, encourages experimentation and contributes meaningfully to the ceramic community.
Together, they are committed to delivering exceptional experiences in ceramics — for artists, students, collectors and the wider community.
